Mac Admins Slack moves to Slack’s Enterprise plan starting Friday 9 October 2026 at 11:30 p.m. EDT. Slack will be fully down for about 18 hours, and direct messages need roughly 10 more hours to catch up.
Follow progress on the live status page while Slack is down.
Before 9 October: make sure you have a Slack password, and screenshot any custom profile fields you want to keep.

Migration timing and outage
What is happening?
Mac Admins Slack is migrating from Slack’s Business+ plan to its Enterprise plan (you may see it called Enterprise Grid or Enterprise+). The address stays macadmins.slack.com, and your channels, messages and files come with you. The new plan gives the volunteer admin team better moderation, privacy and administration tools.
When is the migration? How long will the Mac Admins Slack be down?
The migration starts on Friday 9 October 2026 at 11:30 p.m. EDT (8:30 p.m. PDT, or 4:30 a.m. BST on Saturday). Slack estimates that it will be unavailable for approximately 18 hours. Following this period, you sign back in, while direct messages finish migrating in the background over roughly 10 more hours. The table above gives the start and estimated end times for key regions. We will post updates on the status page as the migration progresses.
Why this weekend?
Starting late on Friday in the Americas puts the outage over the weekend for most of the world, and it should finish before Monday morning even in Asia and Australasia. The date also steers clear of Apple’s autumn release season, conference travel and religious holidays.
Will I get a warning?
Yes. Slack posts an automatic notice about five minutes before the migration starts, then signs everyone out.
What stops working during the outage?
All of Slack: you cannot sign in, read or send messages. App posts, alerts and RSS feeds that fall in the outage are not sent, and they are not queued to send later. Scheduled messages won’t post during the outage either, so send anything planned for that weekend before or after it.
What about Slack Connect channels shared with other organisations?
People from other organisations can’t use shared channels during the outage either. Afterwards the channels work as normal; if a partner still sees an error, a hard reload fixes it (Cmd-Shift-R on a Mac, Ctrl-Shift-R on Windows or Linux). For about a day, partners may see two entries for the same person when they @-mention someone; either one reaches the right person.
Signing back in
Do I need to sign in again afterwards?
Yes, on every device: desktop app, phone and browser. Go to macadmins.slack.com, which will take you to the new sign-in page.
Which option do I choose on the sign-in page?
Choose “Enter email and password”. The green “Sign in with SSO” button is single sign-on for the Foundation’s board and moderators, and won’t work for community members.
Will my existing password still work?
Yes. If you have a Slack password today, the same password keeps working after the migration.
I don’t have a Slack password. I sign in with a code sent by email, or with Google or Apple.
Set a password before 9 October. Signing in with an emailed code stops working after the migration, and every member will need a password. While signed in, click your profile picture, choose Profile, open the three-dot menu and select Account settings; next to Password, click Expand, then “Reset your password by email”. Slack’s password help page has the details, and you’ll need access to the email inbox on your Slack account.
I’ve forgotten my password.
Go to the Mac Admins Slack password reset page and follow the link Slack emails you.
I used two-factor authentication. Does it carry over?
No. Two-factor settings are not migrated, so set 2FA up again once you are back in; Slack’s two-factor help page walks through it. 2FA is not compulsory for members at launch. If the board makes it compulsory later, you’ll have 24 hours from then to set it up, after which Slack prompts you when you sign in.
Is the email from Slack about our workspace joining an organisation genuine?
Yes, if it comes from feedback@slack.com with the subject “Your workspace has joined an organization”. Slack sends it when the main outage ends, and its “Launch Slack” button takes you to the sign-in page. If in doubt, don’t click: type macadmins.slack.com into your browser instead. The Mac Admins team will never ask you for your password.
I haven’t used Mac Admins Slack in years. Does my account still exist?
Yes. No accounts are being deactivated for inactivity. Sign in with your email and password, and use “Forgot password?” if you don’t remember it.
I no longer have access to the email address on my account.
Visit our Slack help page to reach the admin team.
Data that carries over and data that does not
What comes across?
All channels and their history, direct messages, files, canvases, custom emoji, workflows and webhooks, and approved apps. Workspace, channel and user IDs stay the same, so channel email addresses and workflow links keep working.
What doesn’t come across?
Custom profile fields, such as a GitHub link, are not migrated, and neither are name pronunciation (text and audio) or start date. Take a screenshot of your profile before 9 October and re-enter anything you want to keep afterwards. A workflow that someone started but hadn’t finished before the migration can’t be completed afterwards and needs to be run again.
Do I need to reconnect any apps?
Probably not. Apps you connected to your own account, such as Google Drive or a calendar, should keep working; if one asks you to sign in again, just re-authorise it.
Are any apps being removed?
Yes. Before the migration the admins are uninstalling apps and bots that were added without approval, in line with the Foundation’s policy on custom apps.
Will I be asked to accept the code of conduct?
The board plans to ask every member to accept the community’s terms, including the code of conduct, the next time they sign in.
How do I report a message?
The Enterprise plan adds “Flag this message” to each message’s menu. A flag goes privately to the moderation team, and the person you flagged isn’t told. You can still ask for help through the admin help desk (Ravenna) as you do now.
Are Slack’s AI features being switched on? Will my messages train Slack’s AI?
Slack’s AI features are on by default on the Enterprise plan. The Foundation has kept them off until now and is reviewing which to disable before launch. It has also asked Slack to exclude Mac Admins data from Slack’s global machine-learning models.
Is anything else changing?
Email addresses stay hidden on profiles, as now. The new plan also lets the Foundation add separate workspaces in future; nothing about that changes for members on day one.
After the migration
Some of my direct messages are missing.
They are on their way. Direct messages keep migrating in the background for up to about 10 hours after sign-in reopens, and Slack tells you when a conversation is still catching up.
My DMs show “members” instead of people’s names.
This should sort itself out within 12 to 24 hours. Clearing Slack’s cache and restarting usually fixes it sooner.
Search isn’t finding things.
Slack rebuilds its search index after the move, so results will be patchy for a while. Your messages are all there.
Slack looks or behaves oddly.
First, reload: Cmd-Shift-R on a Mac, Ctrl-Shift-R on Windows or Linux. If that doesn’t help, clear the cache:
- Mac: in Slack’s Help menu, choose Troubleshooting, then Clear Cache and Restart.
- Windows: click the menu (three lines) at the top left, then Help, Troubleshooting, Clear Cache and Restart.
- iPhone and iPad: in Settings, go to Apps, then Slack, and turn on “Reset cache on next launch”; force-quit Slack and reopen it.
- Android: in Settings, go to Apps, then Slack, then Storage, and tap Clear cache.
Clearing the cache can reset a few preferences, such as dark mode. Slack’s connection troubleshooting page has more.
How do I get Slack back on my phone?
Sign in on the phone as above, or use a QR code: in the desktop app, click the workspace name at the top of the sidebar, choose “Sign in on mobile” and scan the code with your phone.
I signed in through my browser. How do I get back to the desktop app?
In the browser tab, click the organisation name at the top left and choose “Open the Slack app”; allow your browser to open it.
Help and updates
Where can I follow progress while Slack is down?
Slack itself will be unreachable, so updates will be posted on the status page here on macadmins.org.
Where do I get help afterwards?
Ask in #ask-about-this-slack, or open a request with the admin help desk as you do now; both carry on working after the migration. If you can’t get into Slack at all, visit our Slack help page to reach the admin team.
Can new people still join?
Yes, but the route changes, because the Enterprise plan has no public invite link. New members will request an invitation through a form on our Slack page, which goes live after the migration weekend.
